Chris Johnson is currently a dissertation director and independent study advisor with the Insititute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) and recently an Assistant Professor of Culture and Media at Eugene Lang College in New York City.

His ongoing projects include “Social History and Bebop, Charlie Parker and the Blues Cadence” an essay on jazz theory and performance. Chris has been a Fulbright Senior Scholar teaching and doing research at Westfalische Wilhelms-Universitat in Munster, Germany and a Research Fellow at the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for Afro-American Research at Harvard University.

Chris presented a TEDx talk at the inaugural TEDx Hudson, in Hudson, N.Y. in August 2014, titled Drums Rising: Symbol and Myth in African American Culture. The talk was drawn from material from an upcoming book of the same name to be published by the College Music Society and Routledge Press.

In April of 2018 Chris participated in a panel discussion in Berlin as part of the festival titled “100 Years of the Drum” at the House of World Cultures.
